2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the Vancouver Dolphins’ first Canadian Men’s Touch Football Championship. It is a milestone celebrating one of the greatest dynasties in Canadian touch football history and a legacy that continues to shape the sport today.
Founded in 1978, the Dolphins emerged during a pivotal period in the growth of touch football in Canada. They quickly established themselves as a dominant force, winning their first BC provincial championship in 1979 and every provincial title from 1981 through 2004. Their first national championship in 1986 launched an extraordinary run that included six consecutive Canadian men’s championships from 1986 to 1991, and a remarkable 223-game undefeated streak from 1986 to 1992.
In recognition of their exceptional achievements and lasting contribution to the game, the 1986-1991 Vancouver Dolphins were inducted into the BC Football Hall of Fame in 2017.
Forty years after their first national title, the Dolphins’ influence extends well beyond their championship record. Their commitment to excellence helped raise the profile of touch football across British Columbia and Canada, inspiring generations of athletes.
As flag football prepares to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games and momentum continues to grow for touch football’s inclusion, the Vancouver Dolphins remain pioneers whose legacy continues to inspire the sport.
