Chief Executive Officer
Tom was appointed Regional Vice President of Scotiabank, BC and Yukon Region in August 1996, after serving as Assistant General Manager for the Bank since May 1990. After 42 years with Scotiabank, Tom retired on September 1st, 2008.
Although born in Vancouver, he spent his formative years between Halifax and Ottawa where he started working for the Bank in 1966. His career with Scotiabank carried him through a number of branches in Ontario and Nova Scotia. Following his branch exposure, he held senior positions in the Bank’s Regional Office in Halifax and its Executive Offices in Toronto in International and Corporate Banking, Human Resources and Organizational Development.
He is active in both business and community endeavours, including a number of charities. He is especially proud of his long association with the United Way of the Lower Mainland. Tom spent over 18 years being associated with United Way including 15 years being a member of the Campaign Cabinet. Tom also sat on the United Way Board of Directors for a term of 7 years and during this time was the Chair of both the Finance and Audit Committee and the Governance Committee. In 2006 he served as Chair of the Board of Directors. He is a Past President of the Surrey Art Gallery Association and served on their Advisory Council. He is also a keen follower of sports and was a member of the Advisory Group to the President of the B.C Lions Football Club and one of the founding members of the “Waterboys”. Tom was also the Vice Chairman of the 2005 Vancouver Grey Cup. In 2009 he took on the role of Chief Executive Officer for the British Columbia Football Hall of Fame. Tom was also an initial member of the Mayor’s (Vancouver) Task Force on Immigration. In 2012 Tom was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for contributions to Canada.
Tom has been recognized by a number of organizations through various awards including the 2005 CFL (Canadian Football League) Commissioner’s Award; the 2008 British Columbia Community Achievement Award; the 2008 United Way of Canada/Centraide Chair’s Award of Distinction and the 2008 Vancouver Board of Trade Spirit of Vancouver Bob Ackles Award which recognizes individuals or groups that contributes to making Vancouver the best it can be.
He is married to Mariette and has two grown children who have blessed them with three grand children. Tom is a golfer and a curler and is currently a member of the Hazelmere Golf and Country Club. Tom and Mariette share their home with Emily, a mini Dachshund Terrier mix who was a rescue dog from Arizona, and Charlotte, a mini Dachshund who was a rescue dog from California (neither are crazy about our cold weather), and with retirement, now spend time in their homes in South Surrey and Phoenix, Arizona and cabin at Mt. Baker, Washington.
Tom was inducted into the BC Football Hall of Fame in 2019 as a recipient of the CFL Bob Ackles Award.
Tom was inducted into the BC Lions Wall of Fame in 2023 as a Founder of the Waterboys, a dynamic group of British Columbia business leaders engaged in building the BC Lions Football Club’s brand and relationships in the corporate community.
In 2023, Tom was appointed to the Board of Directors (Member-At-Large) of the Canadian Association of Sports Heritage.
