Steve Daniel

CFL Bob Ackles Award | 2026

Steve Daniel redefined analytics for the Canadian Football League.

Steve’s career as a pro sports statistician, analyst, and historian began with the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers in 1994. From there, he moved on to a 10-year run with the NBA’s Vancouver Grizzlies, later following them as they moved to Memphis, as their Director of Game Operations & Scouting Information.

Steve returned to home to Canada in 2005 joining the BC Lions as the team’s historian, and the CFL as its lead statistician the following year.

Across his football career, Steve has established a new direction for CFL statistics, both current and historical, creating the league’s first comprehensive database to provide media with real-time, in-game access to all new analytics and data. This access has helped to redefine reporting and broadcasting of Canadian football.

Beyond sports and broadcast industries, Steve’s work has also reached into the wider community as a professional archaeologist working in close collaboration with many BC Indigenous communities to help illuminate and restore their history.

In 2024, Steve was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
