If there is one name that is synonymous with high school and university athletics media coverage in the province of British Columbia, it is Howard Tsumura.
For the past four decades Howard has covered, among other sports, football as a sports reporter for both The Province newspaper, and on-line at Varsity Letters, a site he launched in 2017.
In his years covering sports in B.C., he has been an ardent supporter of amateur football in our province, annually shining the spotlight not only on the high school and university championships, but on the countless athletes who have excelled within the sport’s provincial delivery system.
He has covered countless B.C. High School Football Championship playoffs and games, as well as numerous Shrum Bowl clashes between the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University.
Howard was inducted into the SFU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020 and the Delta Sports Hall of Fame in 2022. He is the only two-time winner of the Fred “Gus” Collins Media Award (2005-06, 2008-09), presented annually to a media member covering Canada West, as well as the 2008-09 winner of the Fred Sgambati Award, presented by U SPORTS to a member of the news media who has made a major contribution to the development and growth of U SPORTS.
