For over five decades, Grant Kerr wrote the sports stories that were must-read if you were a devoted fan of the BC Lions and the CFL.
After finishing high school, where he spent two years as a defensive lineman for the Red Deer Raiders High School Team, Grant had planned to join the Mount Royal College Junior Team. Instead, he found a job at CFCN TV in Calgary which ended up being his path to becoming a media member, ending his playing aspirations.
Grant began his illustrious newspaper career in the late 1906s at the Calgary Albertan daily newspaper before he moved to Victoria and, later, Vancouver in 1964 to begin covering the BC Lions and the CFL for The Province Newspaper. He also covered the Vancouver Mounties baseball team of the Pacific Coast League.
In 1973, he was hired by the BC Lions as the Public Relations Director working alongside the likes of Bob Ackles, Eagle Keys, and Jackie Parker.
Grant returned to his reporting career in 1975 joining the Canadian Press where he covered a wide array of sports through 1997, including several Grey Cups and, of course, the BC Lions watching them transition from their home at East Vancouver’s Empire Stadium to downtown Vancouver’s BC Place.
After 23 years with Canadian Press, Grant joined the Globe & Mail as their West Coast sports correspondent, becoming a member of their highly-respected sports department for 10 years. In that time, he would continue to cover countless BC Lions games and Grey Cup games, as well as NHL games, Stanley Cup games, and baseball.
Grant has received several honours over his storied career. He is a member of the BC Hockey Hall of Fame and a recipient of the Coach of the Year with BC Hockey. He was a member of the Football Reporters of Canada and was inducted into the Vancouver Canadians Broadcast & Journalism Hall of Fame.
