If there was a simple title to give Dr. Bill MacGregor for all his contributions to the game of football, it would be the “Father of Abbotsford Football.”
After a successful football career with the Vancouver Meralomas and SFU Clan, Bill was selected by the BC Lions in the 1973 CFL Draft. He played two exhibition games for the club. With his playing days behind him, Bill was brought in to coach at Abbotsford Junior High School. The following year, he started the Abbotsford Senior High School Football Program and served as its head coach until 1986 when he was named vice-principal. During this time, he founded the Abbotsford Air Force Junior Team in 1987 and served as their head coach for one season prior to accepting the principal position at Abbotsford Senior High School. Soon after, Bill was named principal of the brand new Rick Hansen Secondary School where he was responsible for building and recruiting students.
In 2006 he helped restart the football program at Abbotsford Collegiate and, in 2009, helped with the launch of the football programs at Robert Bateman Secondary School. Today, Bill is a city councillor with the City of Abbotsford and enjoys spending quality time with his family: wife, Pamela, and the couple’s two children – 14-year-old daughter, Gabrielle, and 9-year-old son, Lockhart.
