Surrey, BC (unceded traditional territory of the Katzie, Semiahmoo, Kwantlen, and other Coast Salish peoples) – Some of the most prolific names in Canadian football will be formally inducted to the BC Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 16, 2023 ahead of the BC Lions game versus the Ottawa REDBLACKS.
“Our Class of 2023 include some of the most recognizable names in football who have contributed tremendously to the growth of the game in our province and beyond,” said Tom Malone, CEO of the BC Football Hall of Fame. “We are looking forward to welcoming our newest class in our ceremony prior to the Lions game on September 16 and we are extremely grateful to the BC Lions Football Club, team owner Amar Doman, and President Duane Vienneau, for once again being a tremendous partner for us and for hosting our induction ceremony.”
The Class of 2023 is highlighted by two-time Grey Cup champion and Canadian Football Hall of Famer, Jon Cornish. A native of New Westminster, Cornish was a dominant running back for the Calgary Stampeders winning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian Award three times and the CFL Most Outstanding Player Award in 2013. Joining Cornish being inducted into the Athlete category are Bryan Chiu, Will Loftus, and Mark McDonald.
Veteran sport writer Howard Tsumura, whose name has become synonymous with amateur sports coverage in British Columbia will be inducted into the Media category. The 1996-1998 Richmond Colts of BC High School Football will be inducted into the Team category while Larry Donohoe and Terry Kehoe will be inducted into the Builder category.
Kay Ackles, wife of the late Bob Ackles (former BC Lions President and General Manager), will be receiving the Special Award. Former BC Lions President Dennis Skulsky, a founder of the Waterboys and a member of the BC Football Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors, rounds out the class of 2023.
